Local Information
Hawkinge, once famous for its World War 2 fighter station, and now home to the Battle of Britain memorial exhibition, is located on the A260 which links Folkestone with Canterbury. The village centre offers all the usual amenities including two primary schools, a general store, post office, church, health centre and doctors surgery together with a couple of country pubs.
Leisure & Shopping
A number of shopping centres are within easy reach, with Folkestone, Canterbury and Ashford being the nearest main towns. Canterbury also boasts its famous cathedral and Ashford has a multiscreen cinema complex and the Designer Outlet Village, which offers an opportunity to shop for designer labels at bargain prices.
The Leas Cliff Hall at Folkestone and the Marlowe Theatre at Canterbury provide a wide variety of shows and both Folkestone and Canterbury have excellent cinemas, health and fitness clubs, golf courses, leisure centres and nightclubs. Communications
The M20 is just a couple of miles away and for travel to the Continent, there is the ferry port of Dover, Ashford International Station and the Channel Tunnel terminal at Folkestone. There is a fast rail link to London Charing Cross from Folkestone with an average travel time of around 1hr 30 mins.
From December 2009 the new 140 mph high speed rail link will slash journey times from Folkestone to London by half, bringing the capital to within 50 minutes travel time.
Education
There are numerous pre-school nursery and day schools in the area. Infant and primary school children are catered for locally at Hawkinge, whilst both Folkestone and Canterbury offer a wide range of secondary and grammar schools. Canterbury, also home to the world famous Kings School, Canterbury, and the University of Kent, has many opportunities for further and adult education.
